West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) was established on 1.4.1997 to recruit assistant teachers and headmasters in recognized non-government aided schools in West Bengal. West Bengal School Service Commission Act, 1997 enacted by Notification No. 936-L dated 1.4.1997 came into force with effect from 01.11.1997 for the purpose of recruitment of Assistant Teacher and Headmaster/ Headmistress in recognized Non-Government aided Schools in West Bengal and presently the recruitment processes are guided by the West Bengal School Service Commission . The State Government later on decided that the Non-Teaching Staff in the posts of Librarian, Clerk and Group-D Staff including Laboratory Attendant, Peon, Night Guard, Matron in recognized Non-Government aided Schools in West Bengal are also be recruited through School Service Commission, and accordingly necessary amendments have been introduced in the said Act, vide the West Bengal School Service Commission Act, 2008 and such selection process be guided by the West Bengal School Service Commission 2009.
Commission which is the first of its kind in the country consists of a Central Commission by the name of the West Bengal Central School Service Commission and Six Regional Commissions by the name of the West Bengal Regional School Service Commission which act under the supervision and control of the Central Commission. These are the following Regional Commissions with their territorial jurisdiction:
Eastern Region comprises the districts of Birbhum, Bardhaman and Hooghly with Headquarters at Bardhaman.
Northern Region comprises the districts of Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri,Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur, Malda, Murshidabad and Siliguri Sub-Division within Darjeeling district with Headquarters at Malda.
Southern Region comprises the districts of Kolkata, Howrah and South 24-Parganas with Headquarters at Kolkata.
Western Region comprises the districts of Purulia, Bankura, Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur with Headquarters at Bankura.
South-Eastern Region comprises the districts of Nadia and North 24-Parganas with Headquarters at Barasat.
Hill Region comprises the area within the jurisdiction of Darjeeling Gorkha Autonomous Council constituted under the Darjeeling Gorkha Autonomous Hill Council Act, 1988 (West Bengal Act XIII of 1988) in the district of Darjeeling with Headquarters at Darjeeling.
The Regional Commissions are assigned with the selection of persons for appointment to the posts of Assistant Teacher and Headmaster/Headmistress in Schools within their respective territorial jurisdiction.
Selection should be done by regional level selection test for the post of Assistant Teachers. Merit list will be prepared on the basis of their respective academic score and the marks obtained in the Written Test.
Pay Scale for the Data Base Administrator (on contract) & Programme Officer (on contract) and UDC-cum-Accountant (on contract) as mentioned in the Regulation IV of the Commission approved by the Government in School Education Department in the PB-4 with Pay Band Scale of Rs.9,000/- -40,500/- + Grade Pay of Rs.5,400/- and other allowances as admissible for contractual Employees in the Office of the Central Commission and for the post of UDC-cum-Accountant (on contract) against the Government sanctioned post in the PB-3 with Pay Band Scale of Rs.7100-37600/- plus Grade Pay of Rs.3600/- & other allowances as admissible for contractual employees in the Office of the Central Commission. The maximum age limit is 37 years.
