Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute was changed its present title on January 26, 1997. Established in 1887, it was then known as Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute. This institute is reputed for excellent training in courses in engineering and technology at diploma and, degree and post graduate levels over three thousand students. Over twenty seven courses are offered at undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, postgraduate diploma and post diploma levels. VJTI is considered as one of the top most college of Bombay after IIT.
This institute was granted financial and academic autonomy from June 21, 2004. As a result, the autonomous VJTI has implemented the revised syllabus for the students in June 2004 at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels by implementing much valued choice based credit system. The revised scheme of examinations, which follows a grading system and grade point system, has been implemented. An important part of curriculum is the practically oriented project at the final year of graduation and the dissertations offered by the postgraduate students, and also the in-plant training undergone by the Third Year Diploma students. Significant changes under autonomy are the Distance Education Programmes with IIT with VJTI as a Remote Centre; as also the modernization of the Library to a digital library.
The World Bank grant - TEQIP - the institute has several projects underway to establish itself as a world class technological institute. The modernization will offer excellent central computing facilities to students, who will also have access to improved laboratory and workshop facilities. The faculties at the institute are recognized for its Testing and Consultancy work. Realizing the potential of the institute, reputed industries have sponsored laboratories - for instance, the high voltage laboratory, courtesy Siemens; and the Computational Fluid Dynamics laboratory, courtesy B.A.R.C.

Interested students seeking admission in undergraduate B.E program need to appear and qualify MHT-CET (Maharashtra State Entrance Engineering Test) and should have passed 10+2 exam with mathematics, physics, biology and Chemistry as major subjects minimum 50 % marks to get admissions.
For M-Tech courses, candidates should be graduate in respective streams and required to pass written test and personal interview conducted by the college. Candidates sponsored by any valid institution can also appear for the test and get admission. Candidates who have valid GATE score can skip written test.
For admission in MCA program, students should be graduate with at least 50 % marks and have mathematics as one of the major subject in their graduation program.

Candidates who have secured admission for the first year of MCA are required to pay the fees
at the Government/Aided/University Departments as approved by the State Government.
The concession in the tuition and development fees may be offered to following candidates. Maharashtra State candidates belonging to Reserved Categories, Maharashtra State candidates belonging to Economically weaker sections. Reserved category candidates are required to submit Caste certificate, Caste/Tribe Validity Certificate, Non Creamy Layer Certificate (if applicable) for claiming fee concession. Similarly candidates belonging to Economically Weaker section will be required to submit the Income certificate from competent authority for claiming fee reimbursement. However, the directives issued by the State Government from time to time with regard to requirement of additional certificates and mode of fees reimbursement shall be binding on such candidate.
