The CBSE class 10 exams of 2011 started on 1 March 2011. This exam is special as it will be the last board exam conducted by CBSE before a total ban on exams comes into effect and a grading system takes its place. The grading system was introduced from 2010 onwards. According to the new rule and pattern CBSE 10th board exam from 2011 will be optional and to replace it with an internal assessment, which would adopt a similar pattern of questions to those in the board exam. The new rule is applicable for only CBSE schools and its students and an aptitude exam will be conducted for the Class X students. CBSE will implement CCE grading system and other alternatives instead of the board exams.
The government has decided to bring in the grading system in the school to make the school education relatively stress free. According to the new rule, the ability of the student will now not be analysed on the basis of one examination; rather the students will be graded for their performance throughout the year with more emphasis on continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE). Under this grading system, grades like A+, A, B, C, D and E would be given to the students. Under the new system, the students who wish to continue in the same school for their XII study will not be required to give the board examination but the recent educational reforms include a proposed online test for those students who will transfer their school for higher studies.
