The increasing complicated lifestyles giving birth to a variety of ailments have made it impossible for General Physicians with an MBBS degree to handle all ailments. It is here that specialisation in a particular branch of medicine becomes a necessity.
The demands for medical professionals are tremendously increasing with the unfortunate upsurge of diseases and ailments day by day. At the same time super speciality hospitals are mushrooming both within the country and abroad offering employment opportunities. These along with liberalisation of economy could bring better opportunities for these professionals in terms of remuneration, research and working facilities.Other than Allopathy, medicine also covers different systems like Homeopathy,Ayurveda,Siddha,Unani etc.
Career Options in medicine

Specialised Areas in medicine
Paediatrics: This branch of medicine deals mainly with children, right from newborns to adolescent. Paediatricians diagnose and conduct treatment of the diseases which are singular to children, and study the nature of growth and development of children. To become a good Paediatrics a degree in medicine followed by a three-year MD course in paediatrics is essential.
Cardiology: It is a specialised area of heart care. Cardiology deals with ailments and diseases of the heart. Cardiologists diagnoses and treat diseases and disorders of the heart. Heart specialists can also perform specialised work, including by-pass surgeries, angiographies, angioplasties and other forms of surgery for the heart. Since it is most difficult area in medical science, a three-year MS course in cardiothoracic surgery after MBBS is a must. Further degree would be an added advantage.
Obstetrics and Gynaecology: Obstetricians and gynaecologist treat females’ reproductive age disorders of all age groups. While gynaecology deals with the problems of diseases and disorders of the female reproductive organs, the obstetrician handles pregnancies and child birth. Obstetricians and gynaecologist also conduct specialised surgical operations, including caesarean operations laparoscopies and hysteroscopy. They also deal with cases of ovarian cancers and cancers of the other reproductive organs.To qualify a three-year MS course in obstetrics and gynaecology after MBBS is essential.
Neurology : A Neurologist specialises in diseases and disorders related to the human brain .They handle the treatment of problems related to the nervous system and other problems in the human body, arising from disorders in the brain. A three-year MS course in neurosurgery is offered by many medical colleges.
Deontology: A Dermatologist deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin, and related problems. If any surgery is required, it is dermatologist who will suggest for it. A three-year MD course in dermatology, after MBBS is required to qualify as a good dermatologist.
Ophthalmology: Ophthalmologists are eye specialists who diagnose and conduct treatment for the diseases of the human eye and its related parts. They can also check the eyesight and prescribe corrective lens. Moreover there are Ophthalmologists who are trained to conduct special surgeries, including laser surgeries of the eye, operations for the removal of cataract, treatment of glaucoma, and other such diseases and infections of the eye. To qualify as a good ophthalmologist, an MD/ MBBS course in ophthalmology after MBBS is essential.
Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist ( ENT) : ENT specialists deal with the diseases of the ear, nose and throat. These three organs are physiologically interconnected and so, one specialist can handle nasal problems as well as throat and ear ailments. ENT specialists also conduct hearing tests and prescribe hearing aids. A three-year MS course in ENT after MBBS course is the required educational qualification.
Selection process for MBBS course
Candidates who have cleared the 10+2 examination, with a background in science (bio), are eligible for the MBBS course. However, they have to go through an entrance examination to qualify. It includes an all-India entrance examination which admit students on an all India basis, and the State. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts an all-India entrance examination for admission to the MBBS/BDS course, against 15% of the total seats in all medical/dental colleges run by the Union of India, state governments and other local bodies.
After completing the course and specialisation, those who wish to practise as medical physicians or surgeons should possess a licence to practise as a doctor from the State Medical Council. Unless one has a licence, a doctor cannot practise at any place.
Candidates having an MBBS degree are eligible for taking the entrance examinations for admission to the specialised MD/MS courses. They should also have completed one year’s job prior to their admission of a post-graduate degree/diploma course.
Duration for MBBS course: The MBBS ( Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) course is of five and half years' duration, which includes four and a half years of classroom study and practical, followed by one year of internship. Secondly, the specialised MD/ MS courses are generally of three years’ duration.Diploma course is also available and the minimum full registration with the State Medical Council.
Academic Course for MBBS
The academic course for MBBS includes subjects like anatomy, physiology, biology, microbiology, pathology (pharmacology, ENT, gynaecology) and obstetrics. Paediatrics, orthopaedics as well as preventive and social medicines. The entire course of MBBS program is divided into three phases of eighteen months each. This is followed by compulsory rotating internship for a year’s duration.
The first one and a half years of the MBBS course are spent in the study of pre-clinical subjects, after which the student has to clear the first examination in anatomy, including subjects like embryology, physiology and biochemistry. The second examination at the end of 18 months includes subjects like pharmacology, pathology, bacteriology and forensic medicine.
The three years after passing the preclinical subjects are devoted .to clinical work in hospital wards and departments along with training in the preclinical subjects of medicine, including paediatrics, surgery including ear, nose and throat, ophthalmology, midwifery, gynaecology and social and preventive medicine. The students have to appear in oral, written, clinical and practical tests and only those who are able to successfully obtain at least 50 per cent marks in each part are deemed to have passed the examination
