BA (Hons) English is offered in 46 colleges in Delhi University of which 17 will admit students through the Common Aptitude Test for English (CATE). English (honours) has been a favorite for those who are fond of reading and also those who have a flair for writing. But often, teachers say, aspirants mistake the course, which is all about ancient and contemporary literature, for an English literature course.

The course has two papers in the first and second year each, three in the final year with two optional papers. It begins with recognized writers like Shakespeare, Victorian poets in one paper and contemporary Indian writing in the second paper. In the second year, Greek literature, feminist plays and portions from Mahabharata and Shakuntalam,’’ is there. Students can score in 60%, which is good, if they study the text well.
The Honours Programs are designed for the students who show a strong commitment to an intense study of English literature. At a time when undergraduate class sizes are increasing across the country, English Honours students have the opportunity to work with individual faculty members and in small groups of students with similar interests. The structure of the program demands some study of all periods in English literature, from the Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century, but it also gives room for detailed examination of a particular author or for some specialization in a particular period of literature.
Studying literature gives a sharp eye and indepth reading helps develop a flair for writing. This is perhaps why many students of English (honours) go on to hunt for journalism or mass communication.
