Question : Hi, I am a Div 2 trainee nurse, and my senior lecturers would like us to see if we can trace back the reason as to how the Pulmonary Arteries and Veins got their name. For example, we know that 'normal' arteries carry OXYGENATED blood from the heart to the rest of the Body. And we know that 'normal' veins carry DE-OXYGENATED blood back to the heart. Now the confusing part that we have to find out about is why the Pulmonary Arteries carry DEOXYGENATED blood to the lungs, and why Pulmonary Vein..

Answer : ARTERIES carry (pressurised) blood out of the heart VEINS carry (almost unpressurised) blood back INTO the heart. The heart pumps de-oxygenated (spent) blood via arteries to the lungs where it is re-oxygenated and fed via pulmonary veins back to the heart (pulmonary vena cava). From the heart it is then pumped via (systemic) arteries round the arterial system and then BACK to the heart via veins to the systemic vena cava

Answer : i understand exactly what you are saying and it does seem counter-intuitive at first. Normally an artery carries oxygenated blood from the heart out to other parts of the body. And normally a vein carries deoxygenated blood from the periphery (parts of the body) back to the heart. The reason pulmonary arteries and veins have 'twisted names' is because: deoxygenated blood from your body enters your heart's right atrium by way of the vena cava (vein). then, this blood flows into the right ventricle of the heart and is pumped out to the lungs via the pulmonary artery. once the blood is in your lungs it is reoxygenated. the pulmonary artery is an artery simply because it is a vessel coming FROM your heart. then the oxygenated blood from the lungs comes back to the heart via the pulmonary vein at the left atrium, flows into the left ventricle of the heart and then is ejected from the heart in order to supply blood to the body. the pulmonary vein is a vein simply because it is a ..
