Transparent soap without alcohol Questions & Answers

Question : We're doing a chemistry project in my class and I'm trying to explain the chemistry behind a rubbing alcohol-dish soap-water ice pack. All that I can think of right now is: C3H7OH (isopropyl alcohol) + H2O (water) + soap => ice pack??? What I want to know is why does the alcohol stop the water from freezing and why do we add soap to the ice pack?

Answer : Anything that you dissolve in water will lower its freezing point. You can look up 'colligative properties' and 'freezing point depression' to learn more. But the bottom line is that the freezing point depression is based on the number of particles (atoms, molecules, ions) in solution. The greater the number of particles, the lower the freezing point of the solution will be. Dishwashing soap is water with a lot of 'stuff' dissolved in it (just look at the label). Adding alcohol to the soap creates a 'gel' that won't freeze solid in the freezer.
