Answer : Lucas' reagent is a solution of zinc chloride in concentrated hydrochloric acid, used to classify alcohols of low molecular weight. The reaction is a substitution in which the chlorine replaces the hydroxyl group. Even though this reaction is normally very unfavorable, the zinc ion complexes with the hydroxyl group (by accepting a lone electron pair from O of -OH), making it a better leaving group. The remaining carbocation then combines with the chloride ion to form a chloroalkane.

Answer : Normally, tests for oxygen are done by redox reactions (tollen's, dichromate) because they work fast and all tests on oxygen depends on the idea of forming a precipitate relatively quickly or a colour change, something that we can physically see. Luca's confirmatory test works differently though, it goes through an SN1 (substitution nucleophilic by first order) reaction. You'll see a precipitate or another layer (halide compounds insoluble in water). This is to test for alcohols. Iodoform works through SN2 (binary substitution nucleophilic) reaction where the I- is the attacking ion and you look for a yellow precipitate. basically everything is based on what we can actually see, and watching precipitates is the easiest way to see it. Of course there are other ways to test for oxygen too, like combustion analysis, but that involves calculation based on mass and pressure etc.
