Answer : Aldo Leopold was an ecologist who wrote some very influential works on conservation and land ethics. As he believed, it is right to 'preserve the integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic community'. This is 'right' in the ethical sense, but keeping an ecosystem 'whole' (by conserving wildlife) keeps important ecosystem functions in place (including those humans rely on sometimes without knowing it, like flood protection provided by wetlands, or predators keeping prey populations in check). As Leopold said, 'To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering.' Here, the 'cog and wheel' are species in an ecosystem, and the tinkerer is man. It is wise to conserve ALL wildlife because man does not fully understand how the natural world works. Being careless and forcing something to extinction could have very bad effects for man down the line. Therefore, we should do everything we can to conserve a species even if we don't know what purpose it serve..

Answer : I've spent a good deal of time working on various conservation programs and while I don't think there is a 'silver bullet' solution to this problem, creating sustainable, relevant and long term habitat for an endangered species is a significant step in saving them. I think education on endangered species (on as many levels as feasible) is also critically important. There is a link to the Endangered Species Act below.
