Simple generator   amasci.com Build this ultra-simple AC electric generator from magnets, wire, and cardboard. (And a big nail!) Light a small lightbulb, or flash a red LED. This demonstrates how generators work. Now if you want a more useful device, use a small DC motor as a generator, since it has much better magnetics design. All motors are generators. Figure out how to spin a motor's shaft, and you can make a small powerful generator. Or... figure out how to convert the cardboard generator into a motor! Note ...

How ac generators work animation Questions & Answers

Question : In Science, we're doing an AC/DC debate. I'm Thomas Edison, so I need to have a good argument for DC power. At the end of my argument all the pro- AC people have to ask me questions, so I need a back-up for some tough questions. (Like how AC power works better over longer distances). Thank you so much!

Answer : The advantage of DC power transmission is that any given voltage will carry more power than the equivalent rising and falling power of AC (with limits because the peak voltage of AC can break down insulation including air gaps at DC will not jump.) The overwhelming disadvantage of DC high voltages in 1890 is that there is not the equivalent of a transformer that makes changing AC voltage so easy. The nearest equivalent would have been making a motor that would work off the high voltage (tricky) and that would drive generators at the lower voltage(s). That would result in losses that might/would be greater than from transmission. Also, rotating motor/generator sets require continuing maintenance, especially back then, unlike a transformer that can be hung on a pole in all weathers. Edison encouraged the use of AC for electrocutions because AC puts the heart into fibrillation at lower voltages. He then argued that AC was more dangerous because it was used for electrocutions. ..

Question : I AM A 15 YEAR OLD BOY STUDYING IN CLASS X. I HAVE MAKE A SMALL AC GENERATOR.IT IS WORKING BUT THE NEEDLE OF GALVANOMETER IS TRAVELING ON BOTH ENDS {SIDES) OF METER I THINK THAT AC CURRENT IS PRODUCING AND I HAVE NO LOW VOLTAGE AC BULB !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE TELL ME! WHAT SHOULD I DO IN ORDER TO GLOW BULB.if you know please tell me !!!!!!!

Answer : All bulbs with a filament don't care whether it is AC current or DC. You can use a light off a christmas tree light string. These bulbs are low voltage. Just take an old strand and cut out one bulb and bulb holder and the wires attaching to it. A single bulb should light with 2 volts or so.

Question : I want to build a small windmill generator for my tree house that will produce enough power for a light bulb. i was wondering what would produce more power, a generator with alot of copper coils, or more magnets.and other advice would be very helpful also i want to be able to make it mostley from scratch.

Answer : Use a prep-built motor as a generator. A good AC motor, or a brushless DC motor would work well. You would then want to look up information about 'rectifiers' as the electricity will come out doing AC. A regular DC motor will work, but it won't be as efficient. (But it will be easier to work with, because you won't need the rectifier.) Good project and great idea. I like this!
