Question : Me and a friend of work with large scale trains (1.5' scale, 7.5' gauge), and we are in the process of making a maintenance of way car. We want to know if we would want to use an alternator running through a DC to AC inverter for power or if we can just run an AC motor and have that as the generator. Answer : It's because AC is more widely available than DC. A transformer is a type of electromagnet. Transformers change voltage and current. Voltage from electric generators is stepped up so that the electricity can be transferred long distances over power lines with less loss of energy. AC is naturally produced by rotating generators. Transformers don't work on DC. As a result of the above situations AC is more widely available than DC.

Question : I work with electricity frequently enough and I have a motor that I want to use as a generator/alternator. Its a universal motor so it can be run on AC or DC. Currently I can't find my multimeter and I am having problems finding a answer through searching. Answer : Hi A universal motor is most often a series connected DC motor. therefore it will generate DC voltage. You might attempt to rewire it as a shunt generator which will give you a more consistant output voltage. Series generators have highly variable output voltage depending on load. It would be difficult to get it to work against the battery voltage so it will begin generating. You will have to install one diode between the generator and the battery otherwise the battery will discharge through the generator when your bike is stationary. Good luck.
