Bangalore University (BU) is a public university located in Bangalore, Karnataka State, India. The university is one of the oldest in India, dating back to 1886. The university is a part of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and nears the status of "Potential for Excellence" which is reserved for the top 10 universities in India under the Guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC).The University is engaged in research through MoU with foreign and local universities, organizations and institutions. Numbers of its departments are identified by UGC as Centers of Excellence.
The overall goal of the B.Com Statistics is to provide prospective graduates with a sound academic and practical foundation in the economic and management sciences with a strong focus on statistics, from which to embark on an exciting and rewarding career in the field of statistics, which offers a variety of job opportunities and career paths. A unique feature of the three-year B.Com Statistics is that it consistently balances theory and practice. Statistics is the art and science of collecting, organizing, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting quantitative and qualitative data for the purpose of drawing scientifically founded conclusions.
Statistics can be regarded, among other things, as the science of gaining information from data. With the interactive use of the computer, the statistician can apply statistical models and methods in all types of scientific research, including marketing management, communication management, tourism management, financial management, business management, investment management, human resources management, economics, and agricultural economics. Statisticians are expected to possess proficiency in a multitude of skills. A strong numerical background and interest, the desire to master computer programming and the use of various software packages, the ability to interact with professionals from various disciplines, as well as communication skills, both verbally and in writing, are of importance.
The mathematical science which is concerned with the presentation, interpretation, collection, analysis and explanation of data is known as Statistics. Statistics is applicable to a variety of academic disciplines that include humanity, physical and social science, government and business. Statistics is of two types, that is, Descriptive Statistics and Inferential Statistics.
For doing a Bachelor’s level course in statistics (B.Stat), the candidate must have completed the higher secondary school certificate exam from a recognized board of India. The candidate must have mathematics in the higher secondary studies. The selection to this course is merit based. Some universities take admission on the basis of entrance test while others take admission on the basis of score of the 10+2 exam.
