RAJIV GANDHI NATIONAL FELLOWSHIP SCHEME (RGNFS) for the benefit of SC/ST candidates
The University grants commission invites applications for the award of fellowship for the year 2010-11 11 under Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship Scheme (RGNFS) for the benefit of SC and ST candidates. Selected candidates are award of fellowship belonging to SC/ST category under the scheme.
The scheme has been initiated keeping in view the social background of the candidates for the deprived section of the society and to provide them opportunity to undertake advanced studies and research in Science, Engineering and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences in Indian universities and colleges.
Number of Seats for Fellowship
There are 2000 seats for SC and 667 seats for ST every year for all subjects, 3% seats are reserved for physically handicapped candidates belonging to SC and ST categories as per Govt of India norms.
Purpose of RGNFS
The main purpose of this award is provide fellowship in the form of financial assistance to students belonging to SC and ST to pursue studies leading to M.Phil and Ph.D degree (full time) in Science, Engineering and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences. The candidates should have a post graduate degree in the concerned subject and registered for M.Phi and Ph.D in recognized university, institute or college.
The tenure of fellowship is originally for two years under the RGNF scheme. Before expiry of this period, the work of the Fellow will be evaluated by the committee of three members comprising of Head of the Department.
If the research work is found satisfactory, his or her tenure will be extended further for a period of three years under the enhanced emoluments of the Rajiv Gandhi National Senior Research Fellowship (RGNSRF).

The recommendations of the committee shall be submitted to the UGC for upgradation to the level of RGNSRF
Fellowship in Science, Humanities and Social Science @ Rs 12000/- p.m. for initial two years (JRF); @ Rs 14000/- p.m. for remaining tenure (SRF)
Fellowship in Engineering and Technology @ Rs 14000/- p.m. for initial two years (JRF); @ Rs 15000/- p.m. for remaining tenure (SRF)
Contingency A @ Rs 10000/- p.a. for initial two years; @ Rs 20500/- p.a. for remaining tenure (Humanities and Social Sciences)
Contingency B @ Rs 12000/- p.a. for initial two years; @ Rs 25000/- p.a. for remaining tenure (Sciences, Engineering and Technology)
House Rent allowance as per university/institution/colleges rules Departmental Assistance @ Rs 3000/- p.a. per student to the host institution for providing infrastructure (all subjects)
Escorts/Reader Assistance @ Rs 2000/- p.m. in cases of physically handicapped and blind candidates (all subjects)
How to Apply for RGNFS
The applications in the prescribed format given below may be sent to
Mr Joginder, Deputy Secretary, (SA-III), University Grants Commission, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi-110002 duly forwarded by the Registrar/director/Principal and competent authority of the universities/institutions/colleges where the fellow desires to undertake research work latest by 20th March, 2011 (non-extendable). The selection will be made by an expert committee on the basis of merit.
The decision of the commission in this regard shall be final.
Direct and incomplete applications will not be entertained.
The application form received from the candidates who will not be selected for fellowship will be destroyed after six months of the selection made in that respective year under the scheme.
