Maharaja of Mysore, His Highness Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and his Dewan, the renowned engineer, statesman, Sir M.Visvesvaraya has founded the Unviersity of Mysore on 27 July 1916. University was started with four faculties (Arts, Science, Engineering and Technology and Medicine).
University of Mysore Act 1933 was the first Act of University. In 1960 main Campus Started with 739 acres around the western end of the Kukkarahalli Lake.

Presently four districts come under Mysore University. Those districts are Mysore, Mandya, Hassan and Chamrajnagar. Mysore University gave birth to one more Unviersoty in 1966 when it started Correspondence Courses and Countinuing Education in the Manasgangotri Campus. Later which is called Karnataka State Open University.
The University now encompasses 122 affiliated colleges and 5 Constituent Colleges (with an aggregate of 53,000 students). In addition, the University has 37 post graduate departments, 8 specialised research & training centres and 2 post graduate centres that together offer about 55 regular academic programmes to 3,500 students.
