Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Tirunelveli has come into existence on 7 September 1990. The university is located in Tirunelveli and is also referred as MSU Tirunelveli. Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Tirunelveli 61 affiliated colleges, 5 Mano Colleges and 1 Constituent College, with 65,000 students on rolls. Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Tirunelveli offers post-graduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs (both part time and full time).

MSU Tirunelveli, named after the eminent Tamil Scholar Professor P. Sundaram Pillai. University was established to cater to the long felt desires of the public of the three southern most districts of Tamil Nadu state namely Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari. Manonmaniam Sundaranar University is located at Tirunelveli (Latitude 8.44 and longitude 77.44) a city which has a population of about six lakhs. The campus of the university is spread over an area of about 546.98 acres at Abishekapati on the outskirts of Tirunelveli, 4 kms away from the municipal limits on the Tirunelveli-Tenkasi highway. Along with this, MSU Tirunelveli has in its tenure 179.89 acres of land in Sivalaperi village, Tirunelveli.

MSU Tirunelveli is a teaching cum affiliating University. Manonmaniam Sundaranar University has wide range of teaching programs offered by the various University Schools and Departments of the university. It is affiliating jurisdiction of colleges spans the three southern districts of Tamil Nadu of India, namely, Tirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, and Kanyakumari. Manonmaniam Sundaranar University-MSU Tirunelveli has 24 academic departments. All the University departments are receiving research projects from several funding agencies in India, Europe, USA, Japan and UNO.

Few months ago MSU conducted the Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education Exam. MSU Tirunelveli has published the DDCE November 2010 Results.
