Today English is the most popular language in the world and is now the official language in 53 countries and is spoken across 123 countries. It is now called the “world language” or the lingua franca in today’s world. Thus for anyone who wants to be accepted and wants to flourish in the global market, English speaking is now not only a skill, it is a requirement. Multinational companies and even higher education institutions are now giving more and more emphasis on the ability to effectively communicate in English. Apart from that, developing your English speaking skills gives you an edge over your colleagues or batchmates and immensely improves your overall persona.

But it is a matter of concern that English speaking skills and fluency, as of now, still remains among the weaker areas of the general job-seeking Indian. Thus, a number of institutes have mushroomed all over the country to cater the needs of anybody who wants to improve his/her English speaking skills. You can choose from various courses offered by these organizations according to your requirements or skill level.

The following are a few well-known institutes, which offer such programs:

1. The British Council, Delhi :

It offers courses for different levels of speaking skills, like ‘Talking English Course’, ‘Keep Talking Course’ and ‘Spoken English Skills Course’. These courses are basically designed for developing your pronunciation and fluency in English speaking (but these don’t help you improve your grammar). These courses are interactive sessions and participants need to work in pairs or small groups with the help of materials and audio-visual aids.

2. The British Academy for English Language :

There are a host of different programs offered by this academy, few of which are, the ‘Spoken English Basic Course’, ‘Spoken English Advanced Course, ‘Spoken English Comprehensive Course, ’Customized Courses’, ‘Communication Skills/GD’, ‘Personality Development’, ‘Interview Techniques and Advanced GD’, ‘IELTS, TOEFL’, ‘Call Centre Skills’, ‘Voice and Accent’, ‘Creative Writing’, and ‘Business English’.

3. National Institute of Education and Software Technology (NIEST) :

It is presently offering courses for English speaking and call-centre training at Delhi and Noida. It offers courses for IT and management streams like, ‘Call Centre Training Course’ for BSc(IT), ‘English Speaking Course’ for BCA, ‘Spoken English Course’ for MSc(IT), and 6 months ‘Complete Training in English Speaking and Call Centre Training Course’ for MCA students.

4. VETA Global Institute :

It has over 200 centers across India and offers courses like ‘Accent form VETA’, ‘Fluent English’, ‘Foundation English’, ‘Pro English’, ‘VETA IELTS’, ‘VETA Sureshot’ etc. it also offers ‘Veta Best a Self Tutor Pack’ for learners who have no access to a Veta Direct Learning Center.

RUSSELL’S offer courses that range from the very basics of English to higher end soft skills such as Presentation Skills, Group Discussion skills, Interview training. RUSSELL’S also provide Campus Recruitment Training, Communication Skills for Customer Care & Retail Marketing and IELTS coaching.

A few other such institutes which also offer similar courses are, Let’s Talk Learning Center for English Communication Skills (Mumbai), English Language Teaching Institute of Symbiosis (ELTIS) (Pune), VMRG International (Hyderabad), Avigna Learning (Bangalore), and TEFL India.

Online Resources

There is also a variety of free online resources available, like “Learn English” provided by British Council, which are particularly helpful for teachers and learners of English. This free website provides games, magazines articles, listening activities, stories and grammar exercises for kids, students and also teachers for learning and improving English.
